Chapter 7 is what most people think of when they think of bankruptcy — a "fresh start" with most types of debt completely wiped out. Filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy protection is a bit more involved than filing for Chapter 7 because it involves a court-supervised repayment plan. Once you have completed the plan, your qualifying debts are legally considered paid — even if the plan did not completely pay them all.
Chapter 11 is the "reorganization" bankruptcy you sometimes hear businesses undergoing. In a few cases, however, individuals are also eligible for Chapter 11. Chapter 11 allows a debtor to propose a plan of reorganization to keep its business in operation with the goal of using the income produced to pay creditors over time.
